Week 6: The Power of Spirits

It's felt like we've been standing on the surface of the sun the past few days. We were kissing 115 degrees a couple days ago but I hear it's supposed to get cooler (under 105) here for a few days so that's good!

Throughout the week no too much happened. We teach 2-4 lessons each day and do general missionary stuff each day. On Saturday the elders that we live with, Elder Reilly and Elder McLaws baptized their two investigators who are mother and son so that was cool!

Yesterday was what I want to talk about the most. The first order of business after church (we're there from 7-4 because we cover two wards and got to ward council) was heading over to a less-active's house. Apparently some elders had gone over there previously to cast out evil spirits and it needed to be done again. It is important to remember what Elder Holland has said, "We speak boldly because Satan is a real being set on destroying you." It might seem like a low budget Ghost Hunters to hear about missionaries going out to deal with spiritual entities but it is very real just like how the Holy Ghost is very real. Sadly (or luckily) there was no doors slamming or floating tables to manifest the exit of a very real evil but after everything was said and done the room was lighter and the Spirit had replaced the dull feeling that was there before. People may think that since this is not the first time that missionaries have gone over that these Priesthood blessings don't work but that is not the case. These spirits only come back if they're invited either directly or indirectly. In 3 Nephi 11: 29 it reads, " For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another." Any anger or fighting can lead to the spirit of contention which is of the Devil.

Luckily we have a lot more experiences with the Holy Spirit than experiences with the angels of the Devil. After casting out spirits and dinner and taking the sacrament to some people Elder Etheridge and I prayed about which less active to go visit and we both had the same impression which is a manifestation of the Spirit of God. We spent 30 minutes driving to this house and the person we wanted to visit wasn't even there but his wife was. His wife is an active member and we were able to meet with her and she told us why her husband was less active and she told us that she really needed to see us at that particular time. Of course we had no idea and I didn't even know who these people were but the Spirit knows all. I challenge all of you reading this to do things that invite the better of the two spirits into your life because where one spirit is, the other cannot reside. Church attendance, praying and reading is a spiritual CPR to make sure we are always alive spiritually so that way we can endure to the end. "Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life."

Stay cool
Love,
Elder Puzey
