Week 54: Subway Dancer

So we often drive past this corner because it's the turn we take to get to the church building and the past few weeks we have spotted this awesome sign twirler. I have never seen someone so dedicated and so good at getting people to notice his Subway sign. I don't know how much he gets paid but the man needs a raise (don't mind the Hugh Nibley talk in the background). 

So we were able to meet with a few of our investigators which was nice. If any of you remember a couple of weeks ago we were teaching our new investigator Luis and some lady randomly asked us to come back and teach her son. Well we did go back and we were able to teach him. His name is Chris and he had actually talked with missionaries before so a lot of what we shared sounded familiar to him. The lesson went well, I'm not too sure how interested he is but he's nice and he seemed to understand pretty well. We also met with one of our YSA investigators, Jeremy. We talked to him about the Plan of Salvation a bit more and helped fit all the pieces together. Sadly we had to drop our investigator Don because he pretty much told us outright that he was only interested in learning more about what we believe for intellectual purposes. But we did get to meet with Isaac Sr. and Isaac Jr. and learned a lot about the family dynamic. We were able to watch the first vision portion of the restoration movie on their big screen. Something really cool happened on Saturday though. We were on exchanges and I was with one of the office elders, Elder Clawson. We had dinner with one of the YSA members so it was a little bit of a drive (not complaining). Well we get there and he comes out to greet us and then he says that he forgot that he was having family and a friend over but to come on in anyways. It was his birthday the day before so I'm assuming that's what the added company was from. The dinner was good but then for the little dinner message we talked about the plan of salvation because the friend, Jordan, had already heard about the restoration. So we get into it and we have an awesome lesson. He is asking a bunch of good (and sometimes super deep) questions that just fit the lesson so well. And the family had 3 returned missionaries at the table and a convert so they all pitched in at just the right times to help us answer the questions and teach the lesson. It was some of the best member missionary work I've seen in my life. Jordan seemed interested in talking with us some more so I'll keep y'all updated on that. 

We had dinner with Cory and Andrew. I forgot if I've talked about them before but Cory is a  YSA less-active we've been working with and Andrew is his new roommate from Honduras who is also a less active YSA. Cory had us over on Friday night for a second dinner (he likes making food for us) and Andrew was there. We got to talk about Cory's mission and we shared some experiences from ours and then we shared a mormon message about the refiner's fire (it's a good one if you haven't seen it). 

That's about all for this week. Hard to believe this transfer is half way over. We've gotten some rumors that Elder Holland and Soares are coming to visit the mission so that'll be pretty cool.

Week 28: The Liahona

So we've been here for a week now so we're starting to get things figured out. This week actually flew by for me cause we were super busy! So Monday was transfers and that takes the whole day so that was over instantly. On Tuesday we were down in Rancho again to help bring up the luggage of the new missionaries in our zone. On Thursdays the assistants came up to the desert to talk to us and the other two zone leaders in our stake. All four of us have never been zone leaders before and have never had a companion that was a zone leader so they answered the questions that we had and walked us through some of our responsibilities and such. It was much needed. On Saturday we were back down in Rancho (I'm not complaining cause I love the valley) to go on exchanges with the APs. They live in the backyard of a members house and they call it a barn but the inside is exactly like a house and it is so nice! It's probably 3 times the size of our apartment. Week 49: #findjohn

Well this week wasn't too eventful in the teaching department. We did teach a new investigator named Don on Tuesday. He is Catholic and his son goes to Notre Dame so he has a pretty good understanding about authority. He seemed surprisingly accepting of the different things that we taught and he had real questions to ask us. He wondered if John was the last Apostle and if he never died then why isn't the whole world trying to find John? He said that with all the technology we have and phones and pictures that it should be easy for us to find him. He was mostly joking at this point but he brings up a good point. I think we should all try to find John. He's probably got a lot of stories he could tell us throughout the years. Maybe next time we go to teach Don we can tell him about the three Nephites?? Just kidding. I'm really enjoying living here in Rancho Cucamonga. It reminds me of California which I guess makes sense but being in the desert for 10 months made...

Week 1: World War

The first day at the MTC feels like you're in a tornado with whirlwinds and shafts in the whirlwinds. It's fast paced and everything is new. Luckily there is always someone to point you in the right direction. Not even 20 minutes being here and our new district is in the classroom which is where we meet our companions for the first time. My companion is Elder Jensen who is from Bountiful and spent a year at Utah State. The other two elders are our roommates for our stay at the MTC. I'll save y'all the boring information about our time in the classroom and just get to the good stuff. The story behind the title originates on the first floor of our residence building. That is where all of the language missionaries are staying so many of them have been there for nine weeks and some even up to twelve. When we first moved in one of the elders on our floor lead us to the first floor to get drinks from the vending machine. He told us to prepare for the "World War"...
