Week 58: Mike

Image
So we had Mike show up to church this week so that was good to see! He said that he really enjoyed the talks and the meeting as a whole. Sadly he had to leave after sacrament but that's the third time that he's been to church. It has been amazing to see the members that have been working with Mike. If any of you forgot, Mike was referred to us when we got a random text from a member that said he was bringing his friend that had never been to our church yet. The members are really good friends with Mike and they're all in southern California doing summer sales and such. They've been answering all his questions, reading the Book of Mormon with him and bringing him to church. We have the lessons with Mike in one of the members home and they're always there and willing to bear testimony whenever we invite them too. Honestly they are all goals for being a returned missionary and doing member missionary work.  Other than that we had some good lessons with some of o...

Week 57: Pool Party and Elder Holland

Image
Well we don't have a whole lot of time to email today cause we've been running around a whole lot with transfers and all. My new companion is Elder Willes and he's from Utah, I don't really know him and haven't served around him at all but pretty excited to have a new companion to breathe some life in these areas. He's been out for around 10 months so my streak of companions younger than me (both in literal age and how long they've been on their missions) continues. Not a whole lot of changes to the zone, a handful of people left and a handful came in. Tonight we get to house the two new elders that came right from the MTC so that'll be fun! To send Elder Bryner off on the right note we went to a pool party last Monday night. It was the FHE activity for that night and we invited the two less active members we're working with to go and they had a heck of a time getting there but they made it and had a good time so that's what really matte...

Week 56: Elder Curtis

Image
Well after emailing last week we went to the YSA FHE activity in the hopes that someone brought a non-member friend and/or some of the less-actives we're working with would show up. Sadly neither of those happened but we got to play some water-balloon volleyball which was pretty fun. Gave my shoes and pants a good wash. On Wednesday I was on exchanges with Elder Martin in the Terra Vista ward. The day consisted of walking around ALL DAY. It was pretty unremarkable but we had some good conversations. His current companion/trainer is about to go home in about 7 weeks so I don't know if he's getting the fullest missionary experience with a trunkasaurus for a companion.  On Saturday we had a lesson with Jeremy and we had a recently returned missionary with us. We taught him in the church and then invited him to Stake Conference that night. He actually showed up which was amazing cause he told us he had a date (sorta feel sorry he got stood up but salvation is more imp...

Week 55: Car Fast

Image
We'll the highlight of this week was definitely going on exchanges with my trainer, Elder Etheridge. We both got to talk about cars and music again and that was nice. It's starting to heat up slowly so not looking forward to sweating to death in about a month here.  On Friday we had a "Car Fast" in the zone. Basically it meant a lot of walking everywhere. Didn't help that we live a mile out of our area. Luckily it wasn't too hot an I actually enjoyed being out on foot for a day. We had a lot of time to talk so we chatted a lot about life and such. We had a lesson with a lady in the ward that just lost her husband. She's like an active, less active member so the ward council wants us to practice lessons with her. Our Ward Mission Leader came with us Friday morning. She likes to talk but I like to listen so I enjoyed my time there.  We were able to meet with our YSA investigator, Jeremy, again. We brought a YSA member that had just gotten back from h...

Week 54: Subway Dancer

Image
So we often drive past this corner because it's the turn we take to get to the church building and the past few weeks we have spotted this awesome sign twirler. I have never seen someone so dedicated and so good at getting people to notice his Subway sign. I don't know how much he gets paid but the man needs a raise (don't mind the Hugh Nibley talk in the background).  So we were able to meet with a few of our investigators which was nice. If any of you remember a couple of weeks ago we were teaching our new investigator Luis and some lady randomly asked us to come back and teach her son. Well we did go back and we were able to teach him. His name is Chris and he had actually talked with missionaries before so a lot of what we shared sounded familiar to him. The lesson went well, I'm not too sure how interested he is but he's nice and he seemed to understand pretty well. We also met with one of our YSA investigators, Jeremy. We talked to him about the Plan of Sa...

Week 53: Catching my shirt on fire

Image
I thought I'd go with a more interesting subject line to see if I can trick more people into reading my emails. Let me know if it worked. The reason for the subject line is the fact that this last week I hit my year mark and that means the traditional burning of the white shirt. (See pics email) I had to cut it into strips and put them in a baking pan to keep the flames down to make sure I didn't burn down our balcany or entire apartment building. (Fun fact: The smoke alarm went off for like 5 seconds at 2 in the morning the night after the shirt burning. We still can't figure out why since the flames were sitting in two inches of water for hours by that point) More fun stuff from the week: We got taken to an authentic Peruvian restaurant and it was suppeerrrr good. To finish it off we had some ice cream made with some plan or fruit or something only grown in Peru.  We took some pictures in the middle of Euclid, my favorite street in Upland. (Upland is the city just...

Week 52 : Living on a prayer

Image
Well this week I'll hit my halfway point which is pretty crazy. This week was a whole lot of figuring out how to use our phones and messing with Facebook and stuff like that. We did have a pretty cool experience though. So with our phones we get this app that basically is an online version of all the stuff that we usually have to record on paper. Well other missions have had phones for a while so when we finally downloaded the app we had some referrals waiting right there for us. So we ended up calling one of them and he actually answered so we set up a time with him and got his address. Well we show up on Saturday for our appointment and we have a lesson outside. He really understood the Restoration really well because he actually would clarify what we were saying by putting it in his own words and then asking if that was correct. Well as we were teaching there was a lady who was leaving her apartment and walking towards her car but then she stopped and asked us what church w...
